Édouard Manet (French, Paris 1832–1883 Paris)
He was one of the first 19th c. painters to paint modern life, and a pivotal figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism
Realism >
An artistic movement that emerged in France in 1840's around the same time as the 1848 Revolution. Realists rejected Romanticism, which was prevalent in French literature and painting earlier.
Revolution of 1848 > Springtime of the Peoples, or the Year of Revolution
was a series of political upheavals throughout Europe in 1848. It remains the most widespread revolutionary wave in European history.
Impressionism >
A 19th c art movement characterized by relatively small, thin, yet visible brush strokes, open compositions, emphasis on accurate depiction of how light fall on objects and its continually changing effects.Innovations of the Industrial Revolution found their way into studios and materials (the paint tube for instance!). The emerging science of color theory played an important part in the development and new concepts making up Impressionist thinkers. The invention of the camera in 1864 assisted artists in studying movement, capturing real-life spontaneity and movement by freezing a moving image. I
