"I looked over what you sent me and I have so many ideas on what I can do for this project! I did a little looking around for other ideas too and I found a idea that I really like. I have some fabric dye that I thought I could use like watercolor on fabric, I could then go over it with my sewing machine or embroidery to add details. My inspiration was this picture I found on Pinterest."

MARCH 24th assignment > DUE MARCH 31st
This will be our first assignment following your Spring Recess.
Each of you have been doing quite a bit of research from our Contemporary Painters List on a weekly basis.
From it, you have gleaned quite a bit of information of how artists put their knowledge and passion to use!
In addition, you have learned quite a bit of painting applications in our first seven weeks of the semester!

From the email sent to you on MAR 16th and posted on our class blog >
Painting can take on so many forms!!!
So, should you not have supplies with you at your ready — this gives each of us an opportunity to really do some CREATIVE THINKING & MAKING!!!
Some of you may have your supplies with you, but some of you may not.
I do not want to ask you to go out and purchase a new palette of paints — so let’s put on our thinking caps and really do some mining of the materials you do have!!

Some of you may have access to your paints, or a few of them?
Some of you may have access to drawing supplies?
Some of you may have access to ink?
Some of you may have access to images for collage?
Some of you may have access to fabric, old clothes, etc?
Yarn, thread, food wrapping and packaging—>
Color is all around you!!!

I will need to know this so I can work independently with each of you.
Following your own thinking on this idea and what direction you might like to explore, please respond to INTO ABSTRACTION to let me know your thoughts by MONDAY MAR 23rd at 11:00 am.
1. This includes your plans for the two paintings you are creating
2. What representational object will be found within the painted surface?
3. In addition to Conor Harrington, who have you been inspired by?
4. What are the materials you will be using?
5. Size of work

Remember, put your painting knowledge already gained to work for you — you know a great deal already!!
Here’s some inspiration for you to think of painting with thread…
:: Pepper

Challenge process
1. Think about what materials you have currently with you (including your substrates)
2. Think about your own research of contemporary painters regarding application, materials and their themes
3. Create a 3 paragraph proposal of how you will attempt the assignment INTO ABSTRACTION (inspiration from artist Conor Harrington
4. Two paintings will be created from this challenge that will be due MAR 31st at 6 PM
5. Email your images to me at high resolution at jpepper@cazenovia.edu

6. I will launch them to the blog for discussion to take place remotely

COMMENTS

Grade:

5 Talking Points need to be answered by you prior to our critique.
You need to load and share these with your colleagues on our FBsite.
They include these:
  1. How did you translate the original assignment INTO ABSTRACTION and who, beyond Conor Harrington, from your research were you inspired by?  You need to have one image with complete details to share with colleagues
  2. Three problems you ran into (other than time, of course!)
  3. How did you solve those problems?
  4. Aesthetically, how do the two works you created translate in their completed forms? Are they pleasing to you aesthetically, to they meet your expectations? Surpass them?
  5. What did you learn from this challenge and what would you improve on next time?
If you’re not a member of this group - you may want to check them out, they’re really quite inventive in terms of painting with thread and fabric!!

STUDENT WORKS, virtually of course!

TESSA BARRY
I did not have my art supplies for painting at home with me so I made do with what I had at home, and I am very happy with the outcome!
Pepper had suggested to me making a collage with fabric and other textiles.
Going off of that idea I found that I could use fabric dye as my paint as if it was watercolor!
I then embellished the painting with embroidery, buttons, and beads to create this abstract pond with floating flowers and leaves on its surface!
I first painted the base layers of fabric dye before sketching ideas, and with how I applied the paint it reminded me of a pond with the purple being the dark deep parts of the water.

Assignment 🦋🦋🦋
Acrylic on 14” x 11” bristol

Project #5 Proposal
After viewing artwork created by Conor Harrington, I was inspired by the movement he creates within his painting through his use of paint and his technique. I had a bit of an artists block when thinking about the project because I didn’t have access to my materials, although, thanks to Pepper, I got all my materials back to me. As soon as I got ahold of my paint, I started to think about what I could create into abstraction. I decided I would create the two paintings on my 11” x 14” Bristol board with acrylic paints. Each of the two painting would be cool colors versus warm colors. I also decided on creating butterflies within the surface of this abstract design and was inspired by paintings that I had found on Etsy.
I figured that I could create the illusion of movement within the painting of the butterflies by adding droplets of paint and dragging it outwards. This was my plan for adding the illusion of movement within this painting as Conor Harrington had in his. I plan on making the butterflies different colors but within the palette of warm and cool colors for each painting. The warm colored painting would include yellow, orange, and red whereas the cool colored painting would include blue, green, and purple.
I would like to butterflies abstractly although I would like them to be recognizable. The butterflies in each painting would be in different placements to differentiate the two paintings along with their two different color palettes. When I begin attempting this project, I will work from the background, then add the butterflies, add additional tints and shades, then create movement by splattering the paint and swiping it downward.
5 Talking points:
1.) I was definitely inspired by Conor Harrington’s movement in his pieces and decided to create two simple butterfly paintings. I was also inspired by some random butterfly images that I found on Etsy which I have attached to this post (images 4-5).

2-3.) I did run into an artists block again with this assignment because I didn’t know what to paint or if I wanted to use paint at all. As soon as I got my art supplies (tytyty pepper) I decided I'd paint butterflies. I also wanted the butterflies to appear more detailed which I could've done, although I used some tints to create highlights which definitely helped make them stand out. I also had trouble making thin brush strokes but I think I managed to get thin white lines incorporated in the butterflies successfully.

4.) These paintings do have an aesthetic within each of them because the cooler one reminds me of a raing day and the warmer one reminds me of rays of sunlight. I do find them aesthetically pleasing although I think I could've done better.

5.) I learned how to create movement in the background of this piece by splattering paint and using a paper towel to swipe across the paint. This created the illusion that the butterflies are flying upward. I also think that I could've managed my time better.. I've been putting a lot of time into other assignments so this piece is rather rushed. I do love that the butterflies in each painting all have the same color palette but each butterfly is still different from one another. Maybe I could've made them more realistic, but being that this piece is abstract, I'm happy with the way they turned out just from simple brush strokes underneath the additional white brush strokes. It was fun to get into paint again.. it's been a while

JORDAN THORNTON
SA 321-Intermediate Painting Proposal #3
Professor Pepper
March 2020

During this course; SA 321- Intermediate Painting, I would like to use acrylic paint as my medium. With the acrylic, I would like to paint landscapes. The first landscape I did was trees, land, and water; which will include leaves on the outside boarder. For my following projects I would like to hit different types of landscapes and add corresponding items on the outside of the paintings. For example, a rock or a mountain landscape, with rocks super glued to the boarder.. Another example is, a jungle landscape, with tropical colors of something on the outside, maybe feathers? One more example that I plan to do is a forest landscape with branches hanging off of it/ coming out of it.

I still be using color theory. I want my paining to mainly be about color! I will be using landscape artist, impressionist artist  and post impressionist artist for reference. Also using many references to draw the imagery and then use real and imaginary color for the color of the imagery is the plan continuing forward. I would also like to make sure to have my items coming out visually make sense on why they are coming out of this particular painting. Also as much as I can I would like to add acrylic to the 3D items I use. For example I have added little colors and details to my artificial flowers with acrylic paint.
